A four-run explosion in the fifth inning lifted the UCC Riverhawks softball team to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Grays Harbor on Friday afternoon at home.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Riverhawks came alive at the plate to take control of the non-conference matchup. The big inning turned a quiet afternoon into a nail-biter that wasn't decided until the final out.
Lexie Gidcumb led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while drawing a walk. Bella Garza and Ella Martinez-Bryson each contributed multi-hit performances, with Garza collecting two hits and scoring once, while Martinez-Bryson added two hits, a run, and an RBI.
Natalie Hudson delivered clutch hitting with two RBIs despite just one hit, while Jordan McArthur crossed the plate twice after reaching base three times.
Cambria Bachmeier earned the victory in the circle, going the distance over seven innings. She scattered six hits while striking out six and walking four to improve the Riverhawks' record.
Grays Harbor pitcher Ashlyn Crone, who also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, took the loss despite a strong effort over six innings of work.
The victory moves UCC to 3-2 overall as they continue building momentum in the early season. The Riverhawks will look to carry this late-inning magic into their next outing.
