Kate Dunham carved up the Riverhawks lineup with surgical precision, striking out seven batters while allowing just two hits as Mt Hood blanked UCC 8-0 in non-conference softball action Thursday at home.
The Saints controlled the pace from the third inning on, scratching across two runs in the third and fifth frames before breaking it open with a four-run sixth inning. Sadie Guyette led Mt Hood's offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Serena Hattori reached base in all three plate appearances and drove in two runs.
The Riverhawks managed only scattered offense against Dunham's effective mix. Center fielder Lexie Gidcumb and third baseman Rylie Miller each collected one of UCC's two hits, but the Saints pitcher consistently worked out of trouble when runners reached base.
UCC starter Kasey Ogan pitched effectively through the first inning before giving way to Cambria Bachmeier, who absorbed the loss despite allowing no earned runs over five innings of work. The Riverhawks' pitching staff was hurt more by timely hitting than big mistakes.
The shutout loss drops UCC to 6-22 overall as the team continues working through a challenging season. With several non-conference games remaining before potential playoff positioning discussions, the Riverhawks will look to regroup and find offensive rhythm in their next outing.
