A fifth-inning offensive explosion from Mt Hood turned a close game into a decisive 6-1 victory over the UCC Riverhawks in non-conference softball action Thursday at home. The loss drops the Riverhawks to 6-21 overall as they continue working through a challenging season.
The game remained tight through four innings, with Mt Hood holding just a 1-0 advantage. But the Saints broke it open with three runs in the sixth inning and added two more in the seventh to pull away from UCC.
Despite the final margin, the Riverhawks showed fight at the plate against Mt Hood's dominant pitching. Center fielder Lexie Gidcumb led UCC's offensive effort with a 2-for-4 performance, while shortstop Jordan McArthur drove in the team's lone run in the seventh inning. Second baseman London O'Brien scored UCC's only run after reaching base safely.
Mt Hood shortstop Chloe Mckenzie torched Riverhawks pitching, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored to pace the Saints' attack. Saints pitcher Gracie Huston dominated in the circle, striking out 14 UCC batters while allowing just five hits.
Kasey Ogan took the loss for the Riverhawks despite a gutsy complete-game effort, surrendering 10 hits while striking out two.
The Riverhawks will look to bounce back in their next outing as they continue building toward the stretch run of their season.
