UCC Riverhawks Womens Basketball 72-71 Peninsula

The UCC Riverhawks women's basketball team came agonizingly close to a New Year's Eve celebration, falling 72-71 to Peninsula in a triple overtime marathon that showcased the heart and resilience of both squads.
After trailing 35-5 at halftime, the Riverhawks mounted an incredible comeback to force overtime. Peninsula appeared to take control in the first two extra periods, but UCC fought back each time to extend the thriller. The third overtime proved to be Peninsula's, as they managed just enough offense to escape with the narrow victory.
Giselle Muffett led the Riverhawks' valiant effort with 26 points on 10-22 shooting, including three three-pointers. The senior guard played 44 minutes and carried the offensive load throughout the marathon contest. Rebekah Beltran provided excellent support with 18 points and a game-high 8 assists, also logging 44 minutes in the extended battle. Kaelyn Shoemaker contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds while playing lockdown defense with 3 steals.
Peninsula was paced by Alecsis Smith's 17 points and an impressive 5 blocks, while Carliese O'Brien orchestrated the offense with 13 points and 9 assists.
The loss drops the Riverhawks to 15-6 overall as they head into the new year. Despite the heartbreaking defeat, the comeback effort and competitive spirit displayed in this non-conference battle should serve the team well as conference play resumes.
