Senior guard Marcus Thompson poured in a game-high 28 points to power the UCC Riverhawks past Roseburg Club 82-72 in non-conference men's basketball action at the Riverhawks' home court Tuesday night.
Thompson connected on six three-pointers and shot 10-of-15 from the field, providing the offensive spark the Riverhawks needed against a scrappy Roseburg Club squad that kept pace through much of the evening. The victory improved UCC's impressive record to 26-6 overall as they continue building momentum in the season's final stretch.
The Riverhawks led by just four points at halftime before Thompson caught fire in the second half, hitting four of his six triples after the break. Forward Jake Martinez added 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for UCC, while point guard Devon Clarke orchestrated the offense with eight assists.
Roseburg Club refused to fold despite trailing by double digits multiple times in the second half. Guard Tyler Bennett kept his team within striking distance with 22 points, including several clutch shots that prevented UCC from pulling away until the final minutes.
The Riverhawks shot 52 percent from the field and controlled the boards 38-31, showcasing the balanced attack that has made them one of Douglas County's most exciting teams to watch this winter.
UCC returns to action this weekend when they host conference rival Southwestern Oregon in what promises to be another crucial test of their championship aspirations.
